In the next century, the IPCC predicts sea levels will rise 3.5-34.6 inches and islands will be hit the hardest because of these rises. A collection of 42 small, low-lying islands called the Alliance of Small Island States, located in the Bahamas, Kiribati, and Maldives, reports to the UN that the rising sea levels could be a threat for much of the life and agriculture on the islands. Although there are many consequences, probably the biggest one is habitat loss. Thousands of species including the penguins in the Galapagos, the Tuamotu sandpiper of Tuamotu Island, the seabird colonies from the Kerguele, will become extinct if we continue to emit carbon and sea levels keep rising. The IPCC says that at this point marine reserves are a “useful management option” and probably the most effective.

The Valero Energy Corporation, an oil refinery and retailer from Texas, has financed a petition to suspend California’s climate change law, which is likely to influence national efforts on global warming. They have given $500,000.The law is supposed to reduce emissions by 15% before 2020, by various means, including a state cap-and-trade system. Maviglio, a spokesman for Californians for Clean Energy and Jobs has said that “This is a strategic effort by the oil companies to try to unravel this law before it spreads throughout the country. The theory is if they can kill it here, they can kill it everywhere.”

The Republicans in the senate have recently introduced legislation that will attempt to stop the White House efforts to make federal agencies consider climate change when proposing their projects. The bill states that the Nation Environmental Policy Act should not document or predict the climate effects of federal action, such as burning fossil fuels. Agencies must look over a project that will produce over 25000 metric tons of greenhouse gases annually. Agencies must also take into account the effects of climate change on their projects, such as building close to the sea, as the sea is rising. The Republicans state that what the White House is doing could stop road construction, delay domestic energy production and hurt jobs.

Bulgaria has many studies in Antarctica that are seeing differences from stuff a couple of years ago to things now. The found out that flowering plants need to live where the climate is warmer, and that has made the number of them increase by 20%. They also found out that a penguin called the Antarctic Penguins population has gone up because they live in areas that don't have glaciers. They also did a few other studies like these.

Hunting and fishing groups have now formed a coalition to spread the facts about climate change. They are focused on helping more animals than the ones that humans hunt. They beleive that as fish and wildlife go, so does the quality of human life. They published a report called "Beyond seasons end" which told hunters and fisherman that they needed to be doing more to help the environment, it told ways that individuals can help and ways that the government can help. The bill that they want to be passed is cap and trade because they will get funds from the bill. They say "What happens to game species like pheasant, duck, elk and trout happens to non-game species."

Governor Charlie Crist are planning to receive the great
everglades by buying back the land. The everglades
are starting to slowly die. They have not bought this
and the states proposal is paying up to 536 million
dollars to buy 73 acres of land. The proposal has
already been cut by more than half from the original
plan announced in 2008, which was $1.75 billion for
about 180,000 acres and the company's intention.
Even though the state is voting to keep this alive
the governor has had many critics about his plan.
Early when they sold the everglades they had no
intentions to make the unemployment rate at a
all time high and to lower Floridas economy.

Officails met in Vienna to talk about the idea. The earth is 75% water, so this is would be a very big accomplishment to climate change. 70% of the worlds population lives within 50km of the sea. Al Khaluf, they started a plant that will help 80,000. According to this article, in 20 years, 5.3 billion people will face water shortages. 97.5% of the water on the planet is salt water, so this is very key in reducing our footprint.

Last year almost half of IKEA's retail countries participated in Earth Hour, now, the aim is higher (I don't know how high, I couldn't find it). IKEA has 123,000 co-workers and 525 million visitors, so they can make a big impact by participating in Earth Hour, Thomas Bergmark, IKEA's sustainability manager has noticed. On March 27 the world will go dark and IKEA stores around the world will have a variety of activities ranging from turning off the non-essential lighting inside and outside the store, offering "solar-powered-lit" dinners, and competitions among customers and co-workers to highlight climate change and Earth Hour.

Scientists have discovered a type of jellyfish called the turritopsis nutricula that is thought to be the world's only immortal animal! It's capable of cycling from an adult stage to an polyp stage (its first stage of life) and back again, its the only known animal that can repeatedly do that, so there may be no natural limit to its life span! It does it by a process called transdifferentiation, where one type of cell is transformed into another type of cell. Researchers are studying the jellyfish to discover how it is able to reverse its aging process. Inevitably, since they're able to escape death, the number of these jellyfish is spiking and they're now silently invading oceans around the globe, rather than just being found in their native Caribbean waters.

The coffee bean is a very sensitive plant. It doesn’t like air that is too hot, cold, dry, humid, sunny, or shady. The coffee bean plant needs the just right temperature, but the effects of climate change are affecting the coffee beans’ needed temperature. Last year, Columbia had a lot of rain, which lessened coffee production. If the temperature is too warm, the beans flower early and the water decreases, leaving less production of beans. To fix these serious coffee bean issues, researchers want to adapt the beans to warmer dryer temperatures, but that would take a long time. The only option is to move the planting.

On Monday, March 22, pollution levals in Hong Kong reached record highs since 1995 (when they first starting recording them) covering the city in a thick blanket of gray pall. Hong Kongs air pollution levals reached over 400 points which is incredibly high considering the fact that even something around 100 is classified as "very high" and anything over 200 is "severe" and can lead to coughing, phlegm, and sore throats. The current high levals were partly caused by a recent sand storm that came in from Mongolia. It affected 270 million people and added to the growing desert area (1.6 millon square kilometers of desert, about 80,000 square kilometers of grassland became desert in the past few decades). But it wasn't only the sand storms fault, scientists said it was also mainly from thier horrible roadside pollution which is also their biggest threat.

Today in 2010 a water line bursts in one place in the country every two minutes according to the New York Times data. As a result of this there is a lot of damage done and pollutants end up in drinking water. Because of this, in the last year, federal lawmakers have given more than $10 billion to water infrastructure programs, this is one of the largest commitments in history. In states around the country it is estimated that $36 billion dollars per state will need to be spent in the next 20 years just on wastewater systems. In many cities people are complaining about rate increases for water and sewer services so these increases have been delayed in many cities.

My article is on the decades long trend of thinning ice in the arctic. With the green houses gasses and soot the ice is very variable in the summers. When the arctic reached a record low on ice in 2007 people thought it was the beginning of a death spiral in the Arctic. A new study finds that the wind also had an affect on how the ice is shaped year so that it could just be ice moving not melting. Scientist have concluded that half of the changes to the sea ice have been from wind. And has accounted for about a third of the overall downward trend.

This Article was about how the plains have been flooding recently and scientists predict it is because of global warming. Scientists think that loosing our dependance on Fossil Fuel, and using more forms of sustainable energy, such as wind energy and solar energy could lessen the risks of flooding and stop it from happening. In some areas global warming is said to cause droughts, but some scientists argue that it is not viable to have drought and heavy rain, snow and flooding.

This boat was made out of a bunch of recycled water bottles filled with carbon. It was also made out of other recycled materials. The power is generated by solar panels and underwater sea turbines. The person who is running the ship, David de Rothschild, wants to raise awareness about climate change and want to show that plastic waste can be used and recycled not just thrown away. the "Plastiki" was made on the San Francisco water front in 2009. The Japanese electronics and solar giant expect the number of solar homes in England to increase from 28,000 to 250,00, because solar energy is becoming much more profitable. The british government is also giving out loans that will let people pay for solar energy. Sharp general manager thinks that in 2014 there will be 400,000 houses that will have solar energy.

Although Taiwan is not a member of the UN, its government has decided to start an international carbon trading system helped by their allies, Africa and the Asia Pacific. Taiwan plans to set up an offshore company so they can take part in carbon trading to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. They are in no formal requirement to reduce their emissions but have started a system where to get carbon credits you promote ‘green’ technology such as solar energy plants and bio-fuel power plants. By 2020 the island aims to reduce their carbon emissions to its 2008 levels.

An upscale kind of train known as the AVE (Alta Velocidad Espanola; in english the Spanish High Speed), has become very popular in Spain. The train is better enviormentally than flying, and for a moderate amount of travel it is just as nice as a plane would be. The train travels at about 186 miles per hour, and cuts the time it would take to travel in a car by over half. 90% of people who traveled from Barcelona to Madrid 2 years ago used to fly, but now the amount of train passengers is more than the passengers on a plane. The train's main goal is not to get people to lower their emissions, but they're simply making the lower emission transportation option more appealing. Spain plans to give about half it's transportation budget of 160 billion to rail travel by 2020.

======A recent study in Toronto observed what kind of consumers are buying environmentally green products. In one experiment, participant were either told to rate or "buy" products from a green or more mainstream store. Afterwards, they did an exercise where they gave money to others (voluntarily). It turns out that people who bought the green products shared less money then those who simply rated them. This leads to the conclusion that because that group had 'done their part' by buying green, they no longer felt a need to give afterwards. Commentators apply these and other experiments the research group did to the bigger picture, because rich westerners feel less inclined to help stop the climate crisis because the crisis mostly affects the poor so they only feel the need to help to a small degree.======

A new company called Calera, is making a profitable method of trapping carbon- into cement. The company says that they will mix the C02 with the regular ingredients in cement, and sell the paste for construction uses; in this process the C02 is made benign. This seems like a good idea because not only does cement production contribute a lot to the carbon emissions in the air, but also demands for cement are steady enough to make the process a profitable one. Skeptics say that it is highly unlikely that this plan will work and be profitable, because researchers has been trying to find a way to trap C02 in cement for 15 years. So far in their demonstration plant, Calera has been able to trap 86% of the C02 in a flue gas in an Dynegy natural gas nearby, connected by pipes.

Senator Lindsey Graham said that climate change legislation will be hard to pass this year because of the tension caused by the recently passed healthcare bill. Graham, John Kerry and Joe Liberman are working on a bill that won’t be introduced until next month. Senator Olympia Snowe form Maine said that it will be especially hard to pass a major bill, like cap and trade because of the environment caused by a rare voting strategy employed by the Democrats. Normally two thirds of the people in the house are required to pass a bill, but there were certain aspects of the budget of the bill that nullified this rule. Although a version of the bill will be written by April, it is highly unlikely that it will be passed this year.

Even though burning wood is not new, throughout the 1800’s was the main source of energy. Wood still is a big part of energy through the development stages. The United States uses wood and wood waste, (this is bark, sawdust and others,) for at least 2% of the energy we use every day. In the U.S. about 84% of the wood waste and wood is consumed by the industry, commercial business and electric power producers. The rest of this is used mostly in homes for heating and cooking. A lot of manufacturing plants in the paper and wood industry like to use wood waste to make their own electricity and steam. This saves the company bunches of money because they won’t have to buy so much electricity or dispose of their waste products.

Some believe that the possibility that we might ever fix the problem with climate change is simply wishful thinking, and that the problem of global warming will be "at best 'managed, but not fixed'". One major factor contributing to global warming that rerely gets addressed is population. By 2050 the population is expected to reach 9 billion. Summary
Out of all the animals humans eat cows influence climate change the most. They not only consume more energy-intensive feed than other livestock, they also produce more methane. However grass-fed cows have the opposite effect. While eating all the grass they cut the blades spurring new growth. Also their manure helps keep the soil rich. Rich soil holds CO2 under the ground preventing it from going to the atmosphere. 99% of cattle in the US spend the last month of their life in a feedlot where they are stuffed with corn and soybeans. This adds a lot of carbon emissions to the cow because it requires fossil-fuel-based fertilizers, pesticides, and transportation. Even though grass-fed cattle produce more methane than normal ones, their net emissions are lower because they help the soil sequester carbon.

A while ago scientists discovered the remains of a horrifically large snake that lived millions of years ago in Columbia. They believe, due to its size, that the climate back in the Paleocene period was 10 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the climate now. The warmer the temperature is, the larger cold blooded animals can grow to be. The snake was about the size of a school bus. That period in time was probably in a warming trend similar to the one we are facing today. moral of the story is unless we stop climate change the world will be overrun by school-bus sized snakes. Ours might even get to be bigger because of all the CO2 we put in the air.

Cement, a high carbon emitting source, could potentially be more than "Carbon-Nuetral." Scientists at Calera company have invested $50 million dollars into putting carbon dioxide coal emissions into their cement. Calera is using this in Dynegy Coal company in Monterey Bay. The carbon substance is a thick, milky white liquid and is consuming 86% of Dynegy's flue gas, or murky gray smoke coming from their power plant. Some problems this new green cement could run into include it not being durable, not working on a large scale production, and the acid made by it can make it difficult to dispose of.

Tasmanian Tigers, although they look like canids (dogs) and are called "tigers", are actually very large marsupials.

Israel's national infastructure minister Uzi Landau called for America and the international community to switch to alternative energy to help fight radical Islam. He says that a large portion of what we pay at the pump (gas) goes to terrorist organisation or other forms of radical Islam. Qoute “addiction to oil” made the issue of alternative energy of paramount importance and “if we don’t find a substitute for Arab oil, their ability to wage extortion will rise along with the price of oil. We need to create these substitutes not by 30 years from now, not by 20 years from now; we need to create them now,” he says we need to change not for enviromental issues but for security. The annual American Israel Public Affairs Committee policy conference meeting in Tel Aviv is this sunday.

This article is about how polar bears, and penguins are going to be affected by climate change. Polar bears are losing
land and ignoring their instincts and are swimming farther to get food, and some times they are succeeding and then since they
are already crazy from not having food. They are killing more things then they need to survive, which they don't normally
    do.
